About the musicians

Pippin Barnett Pippin Barnett has participated as co-founder and member of numerous bands including Curlew, The Orthotonics, Nimal, The Ululating Mummies, Roof, the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra and No Safety.

Among the musicians Pippin has performed and toured with are Conrad Baur, Chris Cochrane, Tom Cora, Fred Frith, Shelly Hirsch, Tim Hodgekinson, Catherine Jeauniux, Zeena Parkins, Hans Reichel, Jean-Maurice Rossel, Hahn Rowe, Martin Schutz, David Wienstien, Shirley Anne Hoffman, Bratko Bibic and Keith Rowe.

He has been recorded on over 40 albums.

Among the venues at which Pippin has performed are, the Kool Jazz Festival- NYC, New Music America- NYC, Mimi Festival- France, Zurich Jazz Festival-Switzerland, Sarzana Music Festival-Italy, Goethe Institute- NYC, Knitting Factory Jazz Festival-Holland and NYC, Festival for Performance and Experimental Music-Copenhagen, Tampere Jazz Festival – Finland, The Kitchen-NYC and The Walker Arts Center-Minneapolis.


Barry Bless Thirty years ago, Barry Bless found an accordion at a flea market. He’s been trying to figure out how to play it ever since. In that process he has created a lot of music.

He is co-founder of the Ululating Mummies and a member of the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra. With these groups, he has collaborated on compositions, albums and multi-media projects including live soundtrack performances to silent films.

A little known fact is that Barry has performed on the Mighty Wurlitzer at the historic Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Va.


Nick LewisNick Lewis is bass clarinetist for the Richmond Symphony, Richmond, Va. He is principal clarinetist with the Williamsburg Symphonia, Williamsburg, Va. During the summer he is principal clarinetist for the Bard Conductors Instrumental Orchestra, Bard College, NY.

The Richmond Symphony, Yo Mamas Brass Band and BLAK Ensemble have premiered his compositions.

As a champion of new music, Nick has premiered works by Craig DeAlmedia, Anthony Kelly, Aristides Llaneza, Caroline Mallonee, John Mayrose, Mike Worth and Iannis Xenakis.

Nick is on the faculty of Howard University, Washington, D.C. and is the founder/director of the Manchester Music Exchange in Richmond, Va.


Dave Yohe Dave Yohe has been teaching music in Chesterfield County, Va., public schools for fifteen years.

He received a master’s degree in music performance and education from Virginia Commonwealth University. There, he studied with Ellis Marsalis, Clarence Seay and Mark Barnet, the principal bassist for the Israel Orchestra under Zubin Meta.

Dave has performed at the Kennedy Center with Jonathan Romeo and at University of Richmond with Dr. David Esleck. He often performs for musicals at Theatre Virginia and Dogwood Dell, Richmond, Va.

Dave has been a member of Dreamstreet and Wild Weasle with Marty McCavitt. He is a member of the Ululating Mummies.


Guest musicians

Carter Blough is a guest bass player. He has been performing and studying bass for over 30 years. Highlights of his musical journey include opening concerts for B. B. King and Commander Cody, lessons with Dave Holland and being onstage with Abdul Wadud.

Christopher Hibben performs occasionally as a percussionist with the band. He is a member of the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra and performed for years with the performance-art percussion group Rukus Watusi and was the drummer for Scrambled Legs.

Christopher designed the Happy Lucky Combo logo.
